Rumor: iOS 5 will be a 'major revamp,' won't debut until fall

TechCrunch reports: two "solid sources" have said Apple will hold off on unveiling the next iteration of iOS, version 5, until this fall instead of debuting in the summer as in years past.

• iOS 5 will launch in the fall and will be a major revamp of the OS.
• It could well be previewed at WWDC, it just won’t be released then.
• The iOS 5 launch is also likely to coincide with the release of a new type of iPad, which we previously reported on.
• The new iOS will be heavily built around the cloud, and we could see several new services launch from Apple that take advantage of this.
• Yes, one of those is very likely a “music locker” service. There is also a fall launch aim for this, during Apple’s annual music-themed event.
• But much of the cloud stuff will first be talked about at WWDC, Apple’s developer event which will take place in June.
• One of the new cloud service elements is likely a location service that focuses on finding friends and family members.
• OS X Lion - some of the new cloud components are likely to be baked into it as well.

The iEveryting Stand

"iMac – check; iPhone – check; iPad – check; iPod – check; looks like anything prefixed with an “i” has found its way to my desk and to organize them is thePolyply. Technically Andrew Kim should be calling it the iPoly, but never mind! The stand holds iEverything in a manner that makes it easy to charge and orient as secondary (and subsequent) displays. I love the way the keyboard can be teamed up with the iPad in the forefront and the iMac in the background.

This particular stand was constructed out of acrylate polymer (acrylic plastic), birch plywood & birch. It holds an iPad, iPod Classic, iPhone 4 and a stylus."

VMWare cliënt for iPad

VMware has released VMware View, a new client for iPad that lets users access their virtual Windows systems from the iPad. Aimed mainly at (large?) businesses, the new client would allow iPad users to run Windows applications on a remote server, from an iPad. Business have traditionally been using the Windows platform, but VMware argues that the viewer is a great way to operate Windows app from a tablet.

The VMware viewer supports a trackpad (including multi-touch) and uses a virtual keyboard for text input. It also supports iPad accessories like the keyboard dock, and the VGA adapter. Ironically, this is probably better than running a Windows tablet because the processing actually happens remotely on a powerful server – versus locally on a much slower processor. The downside is that this setup is probably too complex for small businesses to handle. Video in the full post
